Where are the grooming prices?
Don't worry you haven't missed them! We choose to not list our prices as there are several factors that can change the price such as coat type, density of coat, size of dog, matting, and behavior to name a few. Give us a call to get a price quote! For bigger dogs we are doing a nail trim "trial run". This is where we have your dog come in for just a nail trim. This way we can give you an accurate price quote, on your specific job. If the price and service we're offering works for you, we can schedule you for a bath and/or haircut at that point. We also now add a 20% auto-gratuity on top of groom prices.
Do we offer any walk in services?
No, we do not accept walk-ins. PLease call to schedule. We do have an array of individual services that can be scheduled along with grooming and bathing.
I have a nervous dog what should I do?
We have plenty of experience with anxious pups, and we understand how hard it is as a pet parent to know what to do that'll create the best experience for your dog, the groomers, and you. Don't worry, we have lot of tips and tricks to help! Pet parents often contact us because we are an independently owned business they are hoping for quiet and serene; however, we can actually be a loud and bustling environment. We recommend a nail trim "trial run" where we can figure out how they will most likely behave for the groom, and help us figure out the next steps.
Before any grooming appointment we recommend a few steps to relax your dog. Exercise is great for dogs as a tired dog is a happy dog. An intense work out, think day at the beach tired. A quick drop-off without too much fuss is also a great way to stop your pup from building anxiety. While saying goodbye feels natural it can often make your pup more stressed as they realize they're favorite person (you) is leaving. You can take care of most of check-in from your car then come in hand over the leash and walk out. Paying extra attention to pottying your dog also can help. Just like us, if a dog is trying to hold their potty, it can cause anxiety. While doggy happy pills are sometimes recommended we prefer to try the pup without them unless they take them on a regular basis and are used to the effects. Often giving the pups calming meds won't stop them from any anxious behaviors, it'll just make them woozy after an anxious episode. We recommend talking to your groomer and vet about medicating to find the right brand and dosage.
I need to cancel my appointment, what should I know?
Life happens and sometimes appointments need to be re-arranged or cancelled we get it! We ask for a 48-hour notice to give us time to fill the spot. If you don't reach us, then you can leave a voicemail and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We do have a cancellation policy for cancellations within 48 hours:
-
The first cancellation within 48 hours we notify you of the policy.
-
The second cancellation within 48 hours we take a card number and keep it on file.
-
The third and any following cancellations within 48 hours we charge for the full price of the groom.
This cancellation policy is in place because it can be difficult to find a dog to fill your spot within 48 hours. Thank you for your understanding.
How to get my puppy ready for grooming?
Congratulations on your new puppy! Its an exciting time full of new experiences and grooming is one of those! Your pup will experience a lifetime of grooming so it's best to get started as soon as possible. Desensitization is the name of the game and there are a lot of ways to accomplish this. You can start by practicing gently holding your dog in numerous ways, by the chin, by the leg and playing with feet. Additionally, exposing them to the sound of clippers, and any random item touching them. The more different items that you use to interact with them the more calm they will be when we use scissors and clippers on their face, feet, potty area and body. Kennel training is also a great way to ensure that they are comfortable as they do go in the kennel at various times during grooming.
What's included in a bath/groom?
When your pup comes in for a groom or a bath they will also get ears cleaned, nails, face, feet, and potty area trimmed. Glands are included for little dogs but for big dogs there is a $5 additional fee. Fun fact: Little dogs more commonly lack the muscles to express their glands while big dogs generally can take care of it themselves. The goal of our baths is to moisturize skin, clean the coat, and get the coat ready for a haircut. If they're not getting a haircut, then the goal of the bath is getting out as much loose coat as possible, to cut down on the shedding around your house.
How long does grooming take?
On average groom time runs between 3-5 hours. The 3-5 hours gives dogs and groomers time to move at a comfortable pace with time for breaks (for all parties) and any incidences (like pottying) without sacrificing quality or comfort of the dogs. We ask for the pet parents to schedule for the 3-5 hours and if that doesn't work give us a call with as much notice as possible and we will try to rearrange the timing or reschedule you to a time that will allow for the 3-5 hours.
Do we groom cats?
No, though we have the utmost respect for feline groomers, and there are many wonderful ones around the Portland area. We're a strictly dog-only business, not kitten around.
You said auto-gratuity, what is that?
We have an auto-gratuity of twenty percent on new clients and pups. This is to encourage employee retention and show appreciation for our staff.
Why are my dogs nails so long?
Nails are one of the main conversations we have. We always strive to cut the nail as short as possible; however there are a few factors that go into how short we can go. Dog nails have a quick that grows inside the nail that has blood and nerves in them, this decides how much a groomer can take off. Nails and quicks can grow at different speeds. There are also other factors to nail length like the amount of natural filing a dog gets, usually during walks, especially on concrete. Dremeling helps too but there's a chance they don't like it. We recommend 4-6 weeks to maintain nail length and 2-3 weeks to shorten nails. If you're wondering if your dogs nails are a good length an easy way is to look at the nails while your pup is relaxed and standing still. If they are not touching the ground then they are at a good length. We always include nails during a dogs bath/groom. If your dog struggles with nails there are trainers that work specifically on nail trims, and at home you can practice desensitization by touching their paws, not only with your hand but with various objects around the house like books, tv remotes, etc..
The dewclaw is a nail on the side of dogs legs that doesn't touch the ground. It doesn't get ground down like other nails so it can appear to grow faster. It tends to curl into the pad faster so its important to keep an eye on it.
Do you take my dog(s) out to go potty?
We do not take your pups out during grooming because of the risk if they got away. We strongly urge our clients to intentionally try to have their dogs go potty before their groom appointment, it can decrease a pups stress level. Actively walking them, as opposed to putting them in the yard is very much encouraged. If they happen to go while they are here never fear, our crates have grated bottoms and we quickly clean up messes to avoid any significant impact.
My dog is injured, when can they get groomed?
It's always a hard time when we have a pet suffering from an injury. We want our pups to be clean but we also don't want to set them back in their recovery. We always recommend contacting your vet and we defer to the vet's opinion. They are the doggy health specialists.
Do you offer U-Wash?
No, but there are some great ones around the area and are a great resource for a clean pup!
My dog is matted, what does it mean?
Matting is never a fun discovery whether you find out at home or at the groomer. It’s a very common problem. It's caused by hair trying to fall out and instead being caught by other strands. It creates a tangle that will catch more and more hair until it turns into a matt. They tend to form close to the skin and, to your pup, it feels like a tight ponytail that’s been up for too long. It's easy to miss unless you know what you’re looking for. Brushes can go right over the top of them. We recommend a comb to find them and a brush to get them out. Once the matting is established often, the only option is to shave. When we are cutting matting off, the blade has to go under the mat, so it's short. There's also an increased risk of cutting the dog with the blades. We do not accept liability in these situatuions. Our goal for
removing mats is to pick the option that will keep your dog most comfortable in an uncomfortable situation.
